If the BBC Wants to Direct Resources More Effectively

The recent controversy caused by the BBC’s proposals to close BBC 6Music and the Asian Network are a further example of how the BBC is in terminal decline and woefully unable to stop itself from digging a much bigger hole for itself. The BBC is a marvellous institution, with a proud and justified history of achievement and excellent. The problem is though, that times are changing and the BBC is finding it ever harder to keep up with the shifting expectations that audiences have about how they access media services.

Excessive executive pay, based on a model of executive management – sucking dry the organisation and removing flexibility and initiative.

Headstrong surge to provide digital services and to lead in areas that are unproven – a sense that services are there to justify the technology.

Shift and change in the role of the audience – Community Radio offers a real challenge as power shifts from professionals to citizen producers.

Why does everything have to be produced to such a high standard. Television drama was at it’s most inventive when it was locked in the studio and produced on a shoe string.
