TECH1030 Studio Practice for Radio Module Handbook

Sound, by it’s very nature is essential to radio. Without the purposeful and creative use of audio recordings and audio feeds, the medium of broadcast radio, and the emerging medium of online audio content, it would be impossible to produce engaging and meaningful content. This module combines the creative use of audio production with the practices and techniques associated with digital audio recording.

Radio makes use of high quality audio, both in the studio, on location in field recordings, and during outside broadcasts. This module gives learners the opportunity to experience and gain knowledge of the techniques, methods and concepts associated with studio and location audio production for radio and audio content development.

Through practical activity learners will experience different types of recordings common to broadcast radio and online audio, including simple music sessions, drama production, voice-over, commercials production, outside broadcasts and location sessions.

By exploring how audio content is developed and produced, using industry standard approaches and techniques, this module allows students the opportunity to experiment with, and experience, the process of producing compel-ling radio content. In order to help with this, learners will be managing their investigations and interactions by posting content and discussions to the Audiotheque website.

Audiotheque is a project based at De Montfort University that aims to develop an on-line space for the sharing, exchange and development of short-form audio drama. The site is a place for experimentation and the testing of new ideas about audio drama and sound design both by people who are well established in the audio production and radio industry, and people from outside the industry who are enthusiasts about creative audio. The aim of the Audiotheque project is to think of new forms of audio drama, new ways of writing and producing audio drama, and giving a voice to people who would otherwise turn away from the more traditional forms of audio drama broadcasting.
