The Future of Radio in a Multimedia World

We had a very interesting discussion today in my lab for TECH3013 Advanced Radio Production about the challenges that are facing radio as it moves from a broadcast lot a narrow cast medium, and as content becomes ever-more individualised, in the way that Facebook and Google are able to reflect or target the individual preferences and likes of their users. Will we ever see the day when radio adverts and programming are pushed to the individual on the basis of the profile and peer network that they maintain?

We talked about a number of issues impacting on radio, with the crisis of local provision that is the hot topic of the moment. I’m going to use this blog to talk through a couple of the ideas that we discussed and the implication that we may have for the way that we are thinking about ‘Multimedia Audio Content’ in the next couple of years.
