No Online Consultation for Burton Street Car Park

Burton Street Car Park Consultation

Melton Borough Council is consulting on the future of the Burton Street Car Park by holding two ‘drop in’ sessions. But they are not inviting comments or ideas from residents who want to use the council website or email.

According to the Melton Times, consultation sessions are being held on “Thursday, February 16 (2pm to 7pm) and on Tuesday, February 21 (4pm to 7pm)”.

There is a link on the Borough Council Website to the poster advertising the events, but there is no date for when this was posted.

There is no information on the poster about the type of developments that might be included in the plan, or what timescale the council wants to work from in developing this land.

[UPDATE] Local businesses have been written to by Melton Borough Council inviting them to attend either of the drop-in sessions, to discuss:

  • Suitability of current use as a car park,
  • Possible future uses for the site,
  • Access,
  • Pedestrian movements through and across the site,
  • Public Transport in the locality,
  • Interaction with public space (Play Close), and
  • Other issues you feel strongly about.
  • SMAG has written to the Chief Executive of Melton Borough Council, Lynn Aisbett, and asked her to set up an online consultation process and an email address, so that people who have suggestions might get them in to the council without having to turn up in person. (Given the weather we are predicted to have over the rest of the month, how many people will be able to make it to Parkside?).

SMAG also wants to know what type of developments Melton Borough Council is considering for the site? Is it to be used for housing, retail or business or recreation? What is the councils test for a fair market price and how will the site be sustained?

Given that the Melton War Memorial Site has been standing empty for many years, and before that the Melton Station Site stood empty for a long time, what does Melton Borough Council hope to achieve in developing this land?

There are no timescales given in the documents produced by the council, who the outcome of the consultation will be reported to, or how this information will be shared with the public.

South Melton Action Group will keep an eye on these developments and post any information we get as soon as we get any.
